Dear John You Are Invited (Estimado John estás invitado)

Supongo que te sorprenderá la "fama" que has adquirido en mi país en los últimos días, sobre todo porque resultabas prácticamente desconocido, si no para unos pocos que habíamos seguido tu carrera desde “The Daily Show” como corresponsal invitado y luego cuando te hiciste cargo del programa durante la ausencia de Jon Stewart. En fin, como te habrás dado cuenta a todos nos llamó la atención cuando hablaste de nuestro pequeño país en tu programa, claro nos dedicaste un par de minutos pero en realidad para burlarte de nuestro presidente.

Espero que no creas que hemos exagerado en nuestra reacción o la expliques con esa dosis de pasión que se nos atribuye a los latinos. Lo único que pasa es que por primera vez en más de 20 años tenemos un Presidente del cual nos sentimos orgullosos (no todos, pero sí la gran mayoría). Está claro que no es perfecto, no creo que nadie lo sea, sin embargo quiero contarte que son más las cosas buenas que las malas, no me mal interpretes no estoy acá para darte una cátedra de ética o de prácticas periodísticas, entiendo que lo tuyo es la sátira (soy fan de tu programa y lo veo cada domingo) pero lograste en los pocos minutos que le dedicaste a mi país quitar toda la admiración que tenía por tu trabajo.

Hace algunos años el Ministerio de Turismo del Ecuador impulsó el slogan, sonríe al turista! Somos conscientes que nuestra principal riqueza no son sólo los espectaculares paisajes (al mismo tiempo puedes ver la luna y el sol, y recorrer el país desde las montañas al mar en un par de horas) pero también nuestra gente.

Déjame contarte también que actualmente en el Ecuador libramos no lo que llamaste una "guerra de redes sociales" sino que estamos luchando por evitar que se termine con un proceso de cambio que nos ha costado muchísimo obtener. Lamentablemente estimado mucha de la gente que se unió a tu pedido de "darle una piel más dura" al Presidente no son tus fans, lo siento pero es así, la gente que ve tu programa en  HBO es muy poca en el país y muchos de tus chistes son netamente para una audiencia angloparlante, fue  gente que se abanderó de tu pedido para insultar al Presidente. Perdóname pero eso para mí ya no es sátira, es cierto que por ser una figura pública está sometida a mayor escrutinio que una persona privada, pero al mismo tiempo no deja de ser humano. Varios estudios se han hecho sobre el efecto del acoso en redes, por eso, estimado nunca justificaré atacar a una persona por más pública que ésta sea.

En fin, te invito a que vengas a mi país podría explicarte que significa el collar de penes que tanta risa te causó, y que muestra el desconocimiento que tienes respecto de nuestra cultura, o quien es Tico Tico, el payaso que sale en el video. Sin embargo, Ecuador se vive mejor desde dentro porque somos el lugar donde las oportunidades viven y los sueños se hacen realidad!

PD.-  Para los ecuatorianos que me leen les propongo una cosa y si la próxima vez que un extranjero se lance una “sátira” poco acertada sobre quiénes somos y qué hacemos lo tomamos con un grano de sal? (Cuántos de ustedes habían visto antes un programa de John Oliver?) Y si la próxima que alguien pida que se insulte a uno de nosotros, no nos lanzamos al “reto” si no que evaluamos la que está detrás de esos pedidos? Solo una sugerencia!

Estimado John estás invitado (Dear John You Are Invited)

I guess that you are surprised by the "popularity" you have acquired in my country during the last days, above all because you were practically unknown if not for a few of us who have followed your career since your days as a guest correspondent on The Daily Show and then when you filled in for John Stewart. Any way, as you have probably realized for everybody it was a surprise when you paid attention to our little country on your show, however a huge disappointment when you did it to insult our president.

I hope you don't believe that we have "exaggerated" our reaction, or you explained based on that dosis of passion that it is attributed to the Latinos, the only thing that it is real, it is the first time in the last 20 yedras that we have felt pride in our president (not everybody but most of us) it is clear that he is not perfect, nobody is, however I would like to tell you that there are more good things than bad, don't get me wrong I am not here to give you an ethics class or to talk about journalist practices, I understand that you're thing is comedy, (I am your fan, and I see you every week) Dear John however you were able in the few minutes that you gave to my country erase all the admiration I had for your job.

A few years ago, the Ministry of Tourism had the slogan "smile to the tourist" We are aware that our main selling point are not only the espectacular sights (you can see the moon and the sun and the same time and be able to go from the mountains to the sea in a couple of hours) but also our people.

Allow me to tell you that nowadays Ecuador is in the middle not of what you called "a war of trolls" we are in the middle of a process of change, something we have struggle to attain. My dear John lots of people who started to tweet to the president are not your fans, I am sorry to tell you but the ones who actually see you on HBO are very few, people jump into the opportunity to insult the President. I am sorry but for me thats no longer a joke, it is true that a public figure is subjected to more scrutiny than a private one but not because of  that it stops being human. Lots of studies have  being made on bullying in social networks, my dear John I will never justify attacking a person as public as he could be.

Anyway, let me invite you to my country. I could explained you the meaning behind the penis necklace that you found so hilarious, or who is Tico Tico - the clown in the video — however I think that Ecuador is better experienced from within. The place where opportunities resides.

PD.  For the ecuadorians who will read this letter, what if the next time someone goes on talking about us (who we are, and what we do) we take it with a grain of salt? (How many of you have actually seen one of Oliver´s show?) What if the next time that someone asks to insult one of us, we don't accept the “challenge” and we defend each other? Just a suggestion!
